AI can of course generate jokes. Check out our earlier post “10 jokes by AI”. Comedy is a complex topic. AI tries to make us laugh with the following several techniques:
Generative language models: Generative AI uses deep-learning algorithms and huge data repositories to generate human-like responses. The data would include jokes and other humorous content in the case of humor.
Computational creativity: Algorithms generate jokes by analyzing wordplay, analogy and metaphors.
Template-based joke generation: This is self-explanatory. A research found that ChatGPT 3.5 told the same 25 jokes with small variations over and over again.
Hence, there is a lot that limits AI’s capacity. For example, we humans laugh at things that are not supposed to be funny. We often find fail videos hilarious, don’t we?
This is the crux of the matter. AI would not find situations involving things that went wrong funny. There are still contextual issues that AI has not overcome. Humor is more than a joke with a punchline. Cultural references, sarcasm, current events and subtleties of language all play into humor. AI lacks the personal experiences and cultural background to make sense of these as well as struggles to grasp these fast enough at this point.
AI also lacks the emotion to understand emotions, and yet humor plays on human emotions. Gauging the appropriate tone and timing requires emotional intelligence that AI does not have.
Humor is largely about creativity, originality and unexpected twists. While AI can generate text based on patterns and existing data, it cannot yet produce truly innovative and fresh comedic content.
Further, humor is subjective that what one person finds funny may not resonate with others. Lacking personal preferences and subjective understanding, it is hard for AI to cater to individual sense of humor.
It is unlikely that AI will replace comedians anytime soon. But it is evolving. Let’s explore how AI can be used in comedy later. In the meantime, get a taste of AI while it is still free:
